The check for updates link in the Firefox menu is disabled if downloaded by Ubuntu Software Center because Firefox is managed by a unique package management system.

So here is what I did to use the new and awesome as well as faster Firefox 4.

1.) Manual and Direct From Firefox Site

Visit the Firefox homepage and download the .tar.bz2 file manually. The best part of using this method is that your previous version of Firefox will be retained.

Now unpack this compressed file and find the launcher and you are ready to go. Add it to the desktop or panel it for easy access.

2.) Terminal Method

Another method for using Firefox 4 in Ubuntu is by installing it using the terminal. Add the Firefox’s stable repository and install it using commands. It’s easy for many and easiest for Linux users.

Here are the commands in case you forget:-

I. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable

II. sudo apt-get update

III. sudo apt-get upgrade

3.) Ubuntu Software Center

Go to your Ubuntu Software Centre and find the Edit button and click it now enter the Software Sources applet and then open Other Software tab.

You are ready to add the PPA. After adding exit the software sources tab and allow the Software Center to update and find the Firefox’s stable repository and your new Firefox 4 is ready to be installed and will be ready for your use.

Use this to add the repository: ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
