But how will you do this? Well, there are some very easy steps that would help you to set up your computer to automatically clean itself from viruses and thus help you to protect your PC from any harmful attack.

  • Install antivirus program- The first step you can take to protect your PC from virus is to install antivirus software and a spyware detector such as AVG, McAfee, Avira, Avast etc from a reputable vendor. You can choose from the wide range of free or paid antivirus software and can install the package to suit your choice and requirements.
  • Update the database- Installing any antivirus software is not enough for the security of your computer. After installation, update the virus database that comes along with the software in order to know what you have to check. Everyday lot and lot of new viruses are being born, thus latest databases are required to update regularly as well.
  • Running scans regularly- After having installed, most of the antivirus software are designed to work automatically so as to scan all the files and emails in a secured manner. Thus, be sure that the real-time scanning function of your installed antivirus is always enabled. It is also recommended to frequently run scans of your hard disk. Moreover, also clean up your entire hard disk periodically that would enable you to free up more space and help your computer to function more efficiently.
  • Keep windows updated- By checking Windows Update regularly, you can update the most recent and latest Windows version in your computer. You can also choose the automatic Windows update feature that would enable you to receive the latest updates automatically with default settings that can be changed later. By keeping your Windows up-to-date, your computer will be kept free from the risk of virus or bug infection.
  • Use system restore- System Restore is an important program to record your documents or settings when any power outage or unthinkable happens that may cause serious damage to your computer files. The System Restore helps you to restore your PC at the same state where it was before in case of any unfortunate happenings. When you want to install a new software program, always create a system restore point to avoid any future problems.

However, no antivirus software can be defined as the best because the requirements of your computer change over time and thus the need of antivirus software also happens to change. So you should choose the one or two antivirus package to suit your computer’s requirements.

But always remember that in case if you install more than one antivirus program, you should always enable the real time scanning for only one program at a single time otherwise they both will get conflicted and the results would be shown unpredictable.

  1. I can not stress enough the need to scan regularly and constantly install updated software. One’s computer can be slowed considerable by the spyware products that will scan every folder of a CPU. Great article. I hope it motivates people.

  2. This is very informative and effective tips which I was looking for.

  3. Dan Voss says:

True! I rarely run scansbut after a friend’s PC really got messed up with a virus, it’s something I just have to do regularly.

  4. Niki says:

Actually most antivirus programs are updating automatically and this setting is set by default. So you do not need to do it manually. Also most have automatic scanning that scans everything you open and use, so you cannot start a virus even if you try (as long as it is in the database of course). I am using Avast Free and it has all these thing. I like it pretty much. It is not the best antivirus, but hey, it is free and it does not make huge load on the PC.
Also as the article said, update Windows. This is very important since viruses are using flaws in the Windows or in another software. So keep as little as possible programs on the computer and update to the latest versions.

A lot of anti virus programs are like viruses themselves. Quite annoying. I actually think Windows’ own built in program is one of the best. As far as spyware protection programs go, I use Spyware Doctor.

  17. I think ,It is simple procedures, every user does this, only problem scanning the full system,it is time cosumable and irritating, specially huge files and datas in hardisk.I scan only the suspected specific file and folder.I use avira antivirus, when any unwanted file or virus want to enter in my hardisk,it catches them and gives me notification for further action.
